Description
I stumbled into painting firetrucks one day when I heard that my hometown, Raleigh, North Carolina, was celebrating the 100th anniversary of it's fire department. I thought "Hey! I bet they would have some old firetrucks there. That sounds like a fun thing to paint!" Little did I understand Fireman Culture! There were a HUNDRED firetrucks there, from all up and down the entire east coast!
I had a blast! I painted several and photographed a bunch. More than that, I discovered a whole sub-culture that I had never even thought about: firefighters who were 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation firefighters, men and women who KNEW that every day when they went to work, it was not inconceivable that they would be called upon to give their own lives to save someone they didn't even know. I was hooked.
I started painting a bunch of firetrucks. Somehow, the leaders of the North Carolina State Firemen's Association (The largest firemen's association in the country) got wind of my paintings and invited me to do a few more; AND invited me to attend their up-coming 125th Annual Convention. I attended. I painted. I was blown away-- again--at the culture and character of these men and women. (I was also designated "The Official Painter of the NCSFA", a title I proudly own.) My paintings are a small homage to these amazing people.
